Professor Sir Simon Wessely will be in conversation with Fergal Keane, Christina Lamb OBE and Jane Corbin. These three war correspondents will give our guests a different perspective of conflicts around the globe.
Fergal Keane
Fergal is a proud father and an award-winning journalist and author. He is one of the BBC’s most distinguished correspondents. Among the awards he has received are the Emmy, BAFTA and the George Orwell Prize for literature.
He has written several bestselling books. His most recent work ‘Wounds’ won the Christopher Ewart Biggs Memorial Prize and was Irish non-fiction book of the year. His book on the Rwandan genocide, Season of Blood: Rwandan Journey, won the 1995 Orwell Prize.
In January 2020, the BBC announced that Fergal was stepping back from his role as BBC News Africa Editor to recover from the effects of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), the result of three decades of reporting on the atrocities of genocide and on conflict zones around the world. He has appeared in an acclaimed documentary ‘Fergal Keane: Living with PTSD.” A book on his experience of war trauma – ‘The Madness’ – was published by Harper Collins in October 2022. Among his passions are history, fishing, and his Labrador/Spaniel cross ‘Deilo.’
Christina Lamb OBE
Christina is one of Britain’s leading foreign journalists as well as a bestselling author. Her despatches with the Afghan mujaheddin fighting the Soviet Union saw her named Young Journalist of the Year at the age of 22. She has since reported everywhere from Iraq to Ukraine, Israel to Zimbabwe and been awarded Foreign Correspondent of the Year six times as well as Europe’s top war reporting prize, the Prix Bayeux, and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society of Editors
She has always particularly focused on what war does to women, recently getting a name check from Queen Camilla, and co-wrote I Am Malala. She is a Global envoy for UN Education Cannot Wait, Honorary Fellow of University College Oxford, on the board of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, and an Associate of the Imperial War Museum. Her most recent book The Prince Rupert Hotel for the Homeless is her first on her own country.
Jane Corbin
Internationally respected as one of the faces of the BBC Jane has covered the world’s major conflicts for more than two decades. As senior correspondent for Panorama, the BBC’s flagship current affairs programme, she has investigated the key foreign, security and human rights issues of our times and won many awards. She has presented major documentaries on BBC2, investigating the rise of China as a global power, the threat posed by Russia under Putin and charted the growth of international terrorism - from Europe and the USA to the Middle East and Asia.
They will talk about their experiences of war reporting and the impact of trauma, challenges of working in their field, the current world political stories including the US election, and the role of the MOD and the British government in the future of global conflict and support for military trauma.
